Which Is More Effective For You - Traffic Exchanges or Lists?

I've been a traffic exchange surfer for nigh on to 10 years now, and early on belonged to a few lists (wonder if they're still around?...), but only recently have become a really active user of lists.

I've got my favorites, ones that seem to be lightning fast in delivery, but I'm wondering, fellow Traffic Exchange network members, which has been a more effective advertising vehicle for you, lists or traffic exchanges?

Have you run any sort of test, with tracked links? Are the numbers high enough to represent anything approaching "scientific" - and by that, I simply mean sufficiently relevant to base future advertising decisions on? Have you compared dollar-for-dollar results? I haven't because I'm on a budget of zero right now! But when I have some bucks to spend, I want the biggest bang for my buck. Where has been your "biggest bang"?

I'm noticing that more and more traffic exchange owners have "sister" list sites now. So, I must assume that the text ad exchanges are making inroads into the traffic exchange member activity. Several exchange are now providing graphics and splash pages specifically targeted to the text ad exchanges. And, more exchanges are making wider use of member-sent email messages.

I'd still like to hear from other members here. Where have you been more successful? With splashes or squeeze pages on traffic exchanges? Or with email messages or graphic ads in the text ad exchanges or other safelists? Do you make use of the "send an email" feature of the exchanges that offer it?
